How to play TimeGuessr

You are shown a real photograph. You place a pin and choose a year, then you see how far the pin and the year were from the record on the page. Do that five times.

The five-round loop

The public daily page labels the position as Round 1/5. The community create page says you pick five pictures. Those two readings agree, so I treat five as the game length.

After you submit, the page shows distance, year error, and a round score. It does not print the arithmetic that turned those errors into points. That gap belongs on the scoring page, not here.

  • Look at the photograph before you touch the map.
  • Drop the pin at the place you can defend, not the country centroid.
  • Set the year with the slider.
  • Submit, then read the distance and the year gap.
  • Repeat until the fifth round, then read the total out of 50,000.

Modes, and what needs an account

Daily, random single player, community games, the archive, and multiplayer are separate doors on the public site. Random games can be played with no timer or with a time limit, and the official random-game settings offer a challenge-a-friend control (one official source).

The multiplayer page, the create page, and the submit-a-photo page ask you to log in. The daily and a random game open without that step. I would not tell someone they must register just to try one daily.

What the photographs are

They are real photographs, not a generated street. Some are archive pictures and some are recent. Daily 1247’s first round, printed on the public page, is a 2026 scene in Bucharest. Writing “every photo is historical” would throw that round away.

Clothing, vehicles, lettering, buildings, and the look of the print are the usual tells. The method page collects those. For a game result, use the official daily page after submitting.

Questions people ask

How many rounds are there?

Five in a standard game. The daily screen shows Round 1/5.

Can I play without an account?

Daily and random games open without a login. Multiplayer, creating a community game, and submitting a photo ask you to sign in.

Is it one attempt per day?

Only community guides say that. The public pages I read do not state a one-attempt rule, so I do not write it as a rule.

Where is the app?

App Store and Google Play, linked from the app page. The browser game remains on timeguessr.com.
